Dimethyl Sulfide

 

sdimethyl_jan.gif (22257 bytes) Global dimethyl sulfide production in January.  The warmer the color, the higher the rate of production.  Lots of dimethyl sulfide is generated in the high productivity areas of the southern oceans (it is summer in the southern hemisphere).
clouds_jan.jpg (13833 bytes) A global map of cloud coverage in the same month (January) shows pretty good correlation between areas of cloud cover and dimethyl sulfide production.

Global dimethyl sulfide production in July.  The warmer the color, the higher the rate of production.  Lots of dimethyl sulfide is generated in the high productivity areas of the North Atlantic and North Pacific (it is summer now in the northern hemisphere).
